THE REGISTERS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE BRETHREN CONGREGATIONS

It was a duty of every congregation administrator to make registers of "the number of brothers and sisters", according to the orders of the Unity of the Brethren. During visitations, which were made by the elders, the congregation administrators submitted those records in order to give evidence "whether there is any increase or decrease in God’s flock." Over thirty such registers have survived. They come from places such as Pojizeri in Central Bohemia and the Elbe district, but most of them are from Eastern Bohemia. The oldest register written in 1600 comes from Turnov, while “recent” registers written in 1620 come from Mnichovo Hradiste, Rychnov nad Kneznou and Stezery near Hradec Kralove.
