THE LETTERS OF NOBLES

What has also survived is fifty-eight letters of noblemen, the representatives of the Brethren aristocracy, and also the owners of the estates on which the individual Brethren congregations worked. The group of the nobles consisted of such personalities of our history before the Battle of White Mountain as Karel the Elder of Zerotin, Vaclav Budovec of Budov, Vaclav Vilem of Roupov or Divis Lacembok Slavata of Chlum and Kosumberk. They were all members of the Unity of the Brethren. They represented a secular, political and powerfull support to the church and after the defeat of the Protestant Union in the Battle of White Mountain, they ended up either on the scaffold at the Old Town Square or in exile.
